Now, with all that out of the way, here is the real mission for this fitting: Dishwasher supply adapter. In older Massachusetts homes, dishwashers were connected to the household plumbing with 1/2" outside diameter soft copper tubing. This was often done with compression fittings on both the dishwasher and house plumbing ends. Sometimes the house end terminated at a reducing "sweat" or solder coupling.

Modern dishwasher installations use a hose thread elbow with a 3/8" compression fitting. A stainless steel braided connector is usually used to connect to the household plumbing.

If you find that your 3/8 x 3/8" braided connector will not fit a slightly-larger fitting on the household side, this 134176 fitting will reduce the 1/2" compression to the 3/8". BRjr 05.2017
